The utility of the PPVT-R as an intellectual screening instrument for use in pediatric settings was assessed in 217 children ages 2 through 15 whose intellectual functioning ranged from moderately retarded to very superior. The classificatory accuracy of the PPVT-R was examined using the Stanford Binet as a criterion measure. Results indicate that although the measures are significantly correlated (r=.88) and mean IQ and PPVT-R standard scores failed to differ significantly, level of intellectual functioning was misclassified in over 50% of the cases. Detailed analyses indicate that misclassifications are independent of age but not IQ classification level. Implications of the results for pediatric assessment are discussed.
Key words: PPVT-R; Stanford-Binet; intellectual screening.
