Many issues remain unresolved regarding how children adapt to cancer and its threat of death. The author's systematic research relating to these questions is reviewed, and four assumptions are presented which seem to express the basic values of workers in this area: that the quality of life is enhanced by maximal efforts devoted to living, that communication of even the child's painful thoughts and concerns to others is healthy, that preparation for necessary painful procedures should be provided, and that the child's style of life prior to illness is the main baseline against which change is to be evaluated.
