Facilitating Family Coping with Childhood Cancer
Children's Hospital Medical Center and Judge Baker Guidance Center Boston, Massachusetts
Requests for reprints should be sent to Barbara Sourkes, Fegan 8, Department of Psychiatry, Children's Memorial Hospital Medical Center. 300 Longwood Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts 02115.
The author's experiences on a pediatric oncology unit are used to describe how to help families cope with childhood cancer. The importance of time as an organizing pivot is discussed. It is suggested that the therapist act as a family facilitator rather than as a parent surrogate to the child. Four specific types of intervention are described, including the facilitation of communication, being available on an ongoing basis, "giving permission" to the parents to use that availability, and modelling skills for the parents to use with their children.
