Parent Education within a Pediatric Practice

Common concerns of parents regarding children's behavior served as a focus for a series of parent education group meetings. This paper describes a format for parent education within a pediatric practice. Attention was given to the orientation and preparation of the parents for the group. A topical outline for the major concepts or issues that were highlighted is provided. A variety of approaches were employed throughout the group to facilitate learning by the participants, including role playing, the showing of video tapes or super-8 films from the actual parent-child interactions, group discussions, and group leader summarization of key concepts. Liaison with the pediatrician is stressed, with emphasis on the built-in follow-up of care that is possible between parents and the pediatrician.
