Behavioral Treatment of a Child Displaying Comic-Book Mediated Fear of Hand Shrinking: A Case Study

Michael F. Waye

Alberta Children's Provincial General Hospital Calgary, Alberta, Canada

The case of a 5-year-old girl who believed her hands were shrinking is described. Verbalizations of reduced anatomical size were accompanied by concomitant emotional upset and contingent parental attention. A behavioral program which utilized the restructuring of the inappropriate cognitions and the redeployment of attentional reinforcement to play behaviors decreased the frequency of reports of shrinking body parts. Follow-up conducted at 6 months and again at 26 months indicated no reinstatement of symptoms.
