Intelligence testing was completed on 38 newly diagnosed pediatric oncology patients and 29 hemophilia patients between 6 and I7 years of age. A low Verbal/high Performance intelligence test pattern was displayed by 39% of the oncology patients as compared to an expected frequency of 12/14% in the hemophilia controls. Increased amounts of prednisone, vincristine, and number of days between diagnosis and intelligence testing correlated with the Verbal-Performance (V-P) discrepancy scores in the oncology patients. These findings and previous studies suggest the need for monitoring the intellectual, emotional, linguistic, and neuropsychological status of pediatric oncology patients beginning at the time of diagnosis.
