The terminology, classification, and diagnostic evaluation of children with communication disorders are examined from medical/neurological, psychological, and language pathology viewpoints. Emphasis is placed on evaluation of communication disorders through interdisciplinary collaboration. Evaluation methods which tap the child's verbal and nonverbal cognitive abilities, perceptual and academic skills, and communication style are described. Integration of these data by profiling the child's strengths and weaknesses across various skill areas is important in developing an individualized educational or remedial program to meet the needs of the child.
