A chronic case of elective mutism, extending over 5 years, eventually yielded to successful therapeutic intervention. An analysis of the case history highlights the importance of directing systematic desensitization to the anxiety attached to the very act of speaking. It also suggests that the omission of the use of stimulus fading may have prolonged the case unnecessarily. The case history cautions against the premature selection of specific behavioral techniques in working with cases of elective mutism.
