This study determined the effectiveness of a prevention program in decreasing the medical fears of a nonpatient population of children in the second through fifth grades. Children in the experimental group viewed a slide-and-audiotape package which portrayed two coping peer models in various hospital scenes (Hospital Package). In comparison to a group of control subjects who viewed a travelogue slide package, the subjects who viewed the Hospital Package reported significantly reduced fears on measures of anxiety related to medical situations. Further reductions were obtained at a follow-up assessment 2 weeks after the package presentation.
